Explain – Holy

Holy

“Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the LORD our God is holy!” (Psalms 99:9  ESV)

Strong’s Dictionary of Hebrew and Greek Words defines holy as: a sacred place or thing, dedicated, consecrated, hallowed, morally blameless, pure.

When I think of holy, I think of God. I think of majesty, reverence, supremacy, unmatched beauty, solemnity, and grave seriousness.

God is Holy. The Jewish temple had a room called the Holy of Holies, where God was present. Only the chief priest could enter, and only once a year. Anyone else entering, or entering at any other time, would die.

“and the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat that is on the ark, so that he may not die. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.” (Leviticus 16:2 ESV)

Holy is the peak of purity and goodness. It is a dreadful and fearful thing for any creature on earth to behold.

Yet, we are invited by God to learn from, worship, and live with Him.

By ourselves, we can never get close to being holy. But God provided a way for us.

He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to earth as a man to tell us, show us, and teach us how to reach Him and invite Him into our lives. Jesus came to be the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of all people. Jesus demonstrated God’s power when he rose from the dead on the third day. (Matthew Chapter 28)

The Holy God of the Universe loves you. The pure, good, and most powerful God in all the universe knows you and wants you to know Him.

“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1 KJV)

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 WEBU)

Dear God,

I am but a tiny grain of sand in the universe. You are beyond measure.

Yet, you made me, you know everything about me, and you care what happens to me. Thank you.

Please help me to understand what all that means. There are so many things I do not know.

Please help me onto the path where I can learn to lead a life that you, the One good, pure, and Holy God, find pleasing.

I know it’s a big request, one I don’t deserve, but I’m asking anyway because you told me you love me and that I’m allowed.

Thank you, God, for reaching out to me and calling me to you. My first steps may be slow and halting, but I look forward to the day when I am running into your arms as fast as I can.

Amen
